I’ll be back!

Week-summary, December 1-7

On Wednesday the Honduran Congress not surprisingly voted for not reinstating Zelaya as president:

Honduras: What Now?

Honduran Congress votes down Zelaya’s reinstatement

And on Friday OAS realized that they were not going to reach a consensus on whether or not to recognize the November 29 Elections:

Honduras: U.S. Urges Support of Neighbors for New Leader

Insulza: “Return of Honduras to OAS will be possible only when the outcome of June 28 is overcome”

The Supreme Electoral Tribunal is meanwhile getting closer to a final result of the elections, and has had to acknowledge that the level of abstention was a lot higher than the 39 % they claimed right after the elections. Here’s an explanation of how they could be so wrong:

Don’t Go Changing….

And the most recent numbers:

Keeping Them Honest

The Human Rights situation and the environment of impunity continue critical. Here’s a public denounce from an American analyst who was verbally attacked on the Election Day because she questioned the transparency and peacefulness of the elections:

Honduran “Electoral Observers” Launch Verbal Attack on Americas Program Director

On Saturday the monthly anti-coup newspaper ‘El Libertador’ was raided by armed men and also during the weekend a number of persons involved in the Resistance have been captured and are now considered disappeared. Sunday evening five young men from the Resistance were shot down at a workshop in Tegucigalpa. The Human Rights organization CODEH talks about 30 violent killings around the country during the weekend.

Week Summary, November 24-30

Before Micheletti ‘stepped back’ on Wednesday as he had announced, he left Honduras with an emergency-decree which allowed the defense minister to purchase whatever material he might consider necessary for national security. This came on top of the ‘security’ measures already taken. Canal 36 closed down because of the constant interruptions in their broadcasting. Radio Globo has been on and off the air. The atmosphere has become tenser every day as Election Day approached. …

The world was definitely celebrating too early. Week Summary, October 25-31

The visit from the US-delegation (Sub-Secretary of State for Latin America Thomas Shannon, National Security Council Advisor on Latin America Dan Restrepo, and Adjunct Secretary of State Craig Kelly), turned out to have an effective influence on Micheletti. The delegation arrived on Wednesday and Thursday night Micheletti announced that he was willing to let congress decide on whether or not Zelaya should return to office. This is the first time Micheletti has opened up for the restitution of Zelaya. Friday morning the two parts signed an agreement which were then handed over to congress for their consideration. The agreement consists in the points already agreed upon in the Guaymuras dialogue plus the possible restitution of Zelaya. USA and OAS are already lifting sanctions and preparing for the composition of missions to observe the elections. …

Summary, October 13-24

The so denominated ‘Guaymuras dialogue’ between delegations representing Zelaya and Micheletti was declared finished Thursday at 12 midnight. The dialogue which started October 7 under the supervision of three OAS-delegates showed progress during the first week and the delegations came to agreement on all the points of the Arias plan – except the one about the reinstatement of Zelaya as president. The two parts have been presenting proposals and counterproposals on that point during the last week but on Thursday Zelaya decided to finally end the dialogue, because none of the Micheletti proposals were considered neither serious nor within the frame of the Arias plan. Zelaya and his delegation state that they are ready to consider any serious proposal from the de facto government, but that the ‘Guaymuras dialogue’ had become yet another dilatory maneuver of the de facto government. …
